Focus On - Focus Off brings attention to our behaviour and how they affect team members. It also poses the accent on communication behaviours we might want in the retro, and can lead to defining working agreements before the retro begins.

Duration: 8-12 minutes

Steps

  1. Draw attention to the focus on/focus off poster and briefly read through it
  2. Form small breakout groups (<4 people). Assign each group a pair of words to define and describe
  3. Ask each group to discuss what the two terms mean and what behaviour they represent. Have them describe the impact each would have on the team and the retro itself
  4. Each group report their discussion to the team
  5. Ask people wether they are willing to stay on the left column (the “Focus on” column). Remote: use virtual hand signs, icons etc..
